The Wimba collaboration suite comes with 4 linked applications: Create, Voice Tools, Pronto and Classroom. The four tools are summarised below:
- Wimba Create
- Wimba Voice Tools
- Wimba Pronto
- Wimba Classroom
Create offers an easy and effective way to convert already existing Word documents and/or create new ones into interactive web content. The Wimba toolbar integrates into Microsoft Office Word and pages that are created (serving as learning modules) can be as simple as text or delivered interactively by supporting the inclusion of audio, video, multimedia, hyperlinks and navigation schemes.
An additional advantage is the inclusion of assessment practices such as self tests, flashcards, quiz questions, amongst others without the need for specialist design.
With the voice tools, we are addressing student’s diverse needs and learning styles by adding an interactive audio component to a lecture or course content. With various uses and applications in using audio as another means to distribute information, learning becomes more personalised and human, with features ranging from voice announcements, messages, discussions, feedback and email. Additionally, already existing audio files can be imported into Wimba and all files can be archived for future reference. An added benefit here is the integration with other BLE tools, such as the Calendar.
Pronto is an instant messenger system which includes document and applications sharing along with VOIP and text instant messaging (populates with students of the course). It is essentially a less formal alternative to the Wimba Classroom (see below). The Wimba Pronto application can be a very effective way to provide students with an online 'office hours' system. It can also be used to provide helpdesk support to staff and possibly to students. It can also be a student socialising or course development space to communicate and collaborate with their peers.
By using Classroom, academics and students can engage in live chat, instant messaging and interact through video and audio projections. The share applications feature supports a number of processes and can be employed well by staff. All content developed and presentations through Classroom can be recorded and archived, reviewed by students anytime. Although mainly directed at a distance learning scenario, tools such as application and document sharing could be used in some face-to-face computer workshop situations. The eboard facility can also be used for collaboration on particular contents across various subject areas.
All 4 applications support a variety of processes and are relatively easy to use, along with clear documentation and good support from the community. The Wimba suite, complementing teaching and learning is highly recommended.
